I started programming the Mac circa 1985, during the Toolbox days, but
have been away from Apple for a while -almost a couple decades, to be
precise.

I stayed away from client/GUI programming, circumscribing myself to
the server and embedded areas. One of the main reason was that GUI
pretty much implied Windows. The situation has changed a lot, however,
with the entrance of JAVA for instance, one does not necessarily have
to become a Microserf anymore.

The one Microsoft technology that caught my attention was the OLE/COM
disciplines, which arguably spearheaded component programming, led by
Microsoft:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component-based_software_engineering

On this side of the fence (the side which is for interoperability and
open standards) we have not been very successful at standardizing
programming methodologies that can rival OLE and [M]COM, I am afraid
to recognize.

We've UNO (introduced by the OOo folks), a contender with great
potential:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Uno

Now the question: since Unix/Linux has not led the way (in standards,
interoperable programming methodologies for clients), how about Apple?
They are easily the leaders on GUI programming.

What does the 4th. most valuable technology company use and recommend?
After all, they aren't stuck with SmallTalk, are they? They are
probably forced to support Microsoft COM for the Mac-Office suite, I realize
that. How short is Microsoft's leash on Ap read more about What development model (or paradigm) does Apple use?

You'd think a JAVAFileObject[] or a JAVAFileObject...'d fullfil

The more information there is, the harder it is to find the piece you
want. Further the more people you've capable of creating
information, the more junk information pollutes the pool, amateurish,
out-of-date, deliberately false, propaganda, misleading etc.

The global information pool is growing at quite a clip. What sort of
technologies will we need to deal with it when that pool is 1000 times
larger than today?

Seems to me we'll need ways of electronically coming to consensus on
various matters, perhaps the WikiPedia is the next model.

I'm examining JAVA for a desktop project. I could not find JAVA much used in
the desktop applications, excepting perhaps developer tools. Overall, it is
the most appealing, but there must be fundamental difficulties, and perhaps
complexities, non-rapid development, or other issues. Does anyone know of

It seems to me any sort of ID that can be forged for under $500 is
worse than useless. Any serious bad guy can easily afford fake id.
For everyone else it is just a hassle if they forget their id.

In our past anonymity wasn't a right. Everyone knew everyone in the
village/tribe. You couldn't easily do wrong without others knowing
it was you.

If we got serious about a Universal ID, what are its characteristics?

1. costs over $1,000,000 to forge.

2. not useful to anyone other than the true owner.

3. can be scanned in under a second.

4. cannot be scanned without permission from the owner.

5. Shouldn't need to be replaced unless lost. Additional photos
could be digitally added as you age.

6. it should be useful as a credit/debit card, id card, door key,
proof of age, link to medical records. It might even capture most of
the information needed to compute your taxes in a way that the
government has to believe you.

7. It would've to be based on encryption technology and digitally
signing information such as DNA, retinal patterns, fingerprints,
photo.

It might be reasonable to design such a card presuming the card will
have the CPU and memory of a laptop running JAVA.

I was horrified to discover that cell phone companies make substantial
charges for text messaging. They use almost no air time. I would've
expected to be thrown in as a freebie with the monthly charge.

Here is how a low cost cell phone system could work.

1. The hand held units are capable only of wifi -- very high
bandwidth, but must be near an ethernet.

2. the cell phone company pays you a commission for people to use your
wireless ethernet, making it open to that company's subscribers. The
owner of the LAN doesn't have to do anything other than run some
little utility that exposes X-amount of bandwidth.

3. You pay for bandwidth -- so text messaging is almost free.
Digitised voice is more expensive, and you can browse the web, upload
and download data and decent speeds.

4. the system works for laptops or hand held units.

5. You can make your net available at reduced rates to attract
customers to buy your coffee, eat your food etc.

Setting up a wifi port becomes a very simple business anyone can get
involved in, both to make money, and to attract people who want to
communicate. The cell phone company needs almost no capital to get its
business going.

Is there any overlap between computer protocols

What sorts of interfaces does a TV

One big announcement at JAVAOne today is an open sourced JAVA
scripting language (based on F3) that will allow end-to-end GUI
development for content developers. The mobile version of this is
designed to run on JAVA ME on Linux OS mobile devices.

https://openjfx.dev.JAVA.net/
http://weblogs.JAVA.net/blog/qmahmoud/archive/2007/05/JAVAfx_mobile_t.html
http://weblogs.JAVA.net/blog/joconner/archive/2007/05/JAVAfx_simplify.html
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/news_press_release,102324.shtml

Based on F3, here are some demos:
http://blogs.sun.com/chrisoliver/entry/live_versions_of_f3_tesla

Btw, some interesting stats on the ubiquity and popularity of JAVA:
http://weblogs.JAVA.net/blog/arungu...ne_2007_da.html

6 MILLION developers

5.5 BILLION devices (WOWZA!!!!!!)

800 M desktops (boooo!!!)

1.8 BILLION phones

11M televisions (these must be the TIVos and Cable set top boxes)

Not to mention (maybe) 6 million PS3 and other Blu-ray players this
year ;-)

And I guess eBay's JAVA EE system is now beat by the NASDFAQ:

"Anna Wing, CIO of NASDAQ shared that NASDAQ processes 150,378
transactions per second (tps), 400 million tps/day, their system
running on JAVA is considered the fastest in industry. They are
working on the next generation of their platform using Real-Time JAVA
to make this happen because of improved memory management, ease of
migration and ability to react to unexpected events with
predictability." read more about JAVAFX Mobile - New Linux OS-based scripting

Missed this earlier...looks like JAVA EE - on top and rising at 45% -

Use of Visual Basic has dropped 35% since the spring, says a poll of
more than 430 North American developers done by research company Evans
Data Corp. Developers have abandoned Microsoft's Visual Basic in
droves during the last six months, and they're using JAVA more than
any other development language, according to a recently published
survey.

Use of Visual Basic has dropped 35% since the spring, says a poll of
more than 430 North American developers done by research company Evans
Data. "Microsoft has dominated languages since the early 90s, but we
are seeing much more parity now," said John Andrews, president of
Evans Data, in a statement. "The use of scripting languages, as well
as JAVA, appears to have limited VB's future market potential."

Developers are not only leaving Visual Basic, they're also less likely
to work in the Visual Basic.Net environment; VB.Net use is down 26%,
the survey shows.

JAVA now holds the top spot, with 45% of the polled developers saying
they used JAVA during some part of the last six months. C/C++,
meanwhile, was used by 40% of the coders, and C# was used by 32%.

After a decade of trying, WinCE has done little to push the state of

lost over half a billion dollars from its Mobile and Embedded Devices

(After a decade of trying) WinCE has only overtaken the competition
where there has not been any competition. The market abandoned
standalone PDAs when the real money turned out to be in mobile phones.

WinCE is not particularly well adapted for mobile phone use, because
Microsoft designed it to suit the needs of a paperback-sized PC.

The mobile phone market is now dominated by Symbian, with Linux in
second place. WinCE only accounts for around 5% of smartphone mobile
sales, which itself is a fraction of the overall mobile market.

Hi all,

SavaJe, the manufacturer of SavaJe OS (an impressive JAVA OS for

now "offline" (even though the website is still up).

This seem to be confirmed by a news :

be a major shock for handheld market (with strong perspectives for

I am using Vista and I am horrified to discover than even after 25
years Microsoft still doesn't understand the temporary files
problem.

When a program crashes, it doesn't delete its temporary files. Over
the years your disk fills with junk.

Windows doesn't:

1. automatically clean up after a crash.

2. mark the files in some way with a naming convention or attribute
bit so that they can be recognised by some batch scavenging program
run periodically.

JAVA is just as stupid. It is time at least to at least get JAVA
capable of cleaning up its own mess. I suggest some official Sun
format for temporary files, e.g.
xxxxxxxx.temp
If all apps use that convention, a simple scavenger program can scan
the disk and mindlessly delete all *.temp files.

Question: The PS3 can be converted to a Linux box, or does it actually

to run the first gen Toshiba players.

I am also starting to explore BD-J (Blu-ray Disc JAVA), which is the

blu-ray format. The opposing application format is iHD from Microsoft,
which is used in HD-DVD players and discs.
